To represent India at the global level, students have to appear for six stages. Stage one is called a preliminary round where students are tested against basic math questions in multiple choice questions formatJaipur Wealth Management. Round two is known as Regional Mathematical Olympiad, where candidates are given three hours to complete six questions.
Stage three is the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. In the third round, around 900 students from across the country are selected and just 35 of them are shortlisted for round four. The stage four is a 10-day residential training camp in Mumbai where students are trained via lectures, exams, and problem-solving sessions and top 6 candidates are selected to represent India at IMO.
These six shortlisted candidates are given advanced training through lectures, tests, and mock papers to appear for the IMO and then comes the final round International Biology Olympiad.
Silver medalist Arjun Gupta got to know about the Olympiad from his father. Sharing his experience he said, “This is my third consecutive year of representing India at the Olympiad. I won the bronze medal in IMO 2022, a gold medal in IMO 2023, and a silver medal in IMO 2024. IMO is a celebration of mathematics. Being exposed to different cultures has broadened my perspective, and enriched my understanding of global diversity. I also had the chance to share our rich Indian culture with my peers, fostering mutual respect and appreciation. This experience has not only honed my mathematical skills but it also helped me grow personally.”Nagpur Stock
Gupta also represented the country in Chess Championship in 2018 and 2019. However, due to the CBSE attendance norm of 75 per cent, he was unable to give his best in the Olympiads. “Till Class 9, I studied from DPS Rohini after that I switched to National Institute of Open Schooling. My parents requested the school authorities to relieve him from attending school and assessments, but they dismissed it citing CBSE’s promotion rules that require a minimum of 33 per cent and an attendance of 75 per cent,” he said.
Arjun said such issues are also being faced by other students who represent India at national and international levels.
A student of Class 11, Kanav Talwar from Uttar Pradesh’s Noida said that the difficulty level is high for these international exams. “I started my preparation for Olympiads from Class 7 and solved math questions and gradually increased the level of questions. Although I was preparing for such exams for the last 2-3 years but I failed to reach the final stage. However, this year I cleared all stages and got picked in Team India.”
Another winner, Ananda Bhaduri has already got admission to the London’s Imperial College. He said that he gave various local Olympiads from Class 8 and then got in contact with a portal named ‘Art of Problem Solving’. The portal is a platform to train students develop the problem-solving skills. “Through this portal, I got an opportunity to interact and engage with some bright minds. With various forums and courses present online, I was able to know more about Olympiads,” he said,
Rushil Mathur who is from Class 12 said that it was a dream come true moment for him when he received the gold medal. “Such events allow you to meet like-minded people. I so enjoyed discussing maths with participants from other countries, how they view the subject and share opinions,” said the 18-year-old man who made his debut in the global event. When asked if he was expecting a gold medal and fourth rank, he said, “I expected that our country will be in the top 5 as we were a very strong team, but I was not sure about getting a gold medal for myself.”
